Carey-Walter Closson, MD

Dr. Closson completed his undergraduate studies at The Johns Hopkins University where he received a B.A. in Biology. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel University College of Medicine). Then, he completed a General Surgery Internship at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Closson’s Anesthesiology residency and Fellowship in Interventional Pain Management were at the University of Maryland Medical System Department of Anesthesiolog,y where he also served as the Administrative Chief resident. After spending almost 4 years at UMMS as an attending Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Medicine Specialist, he joined the National Spine & Pain Centers in 2007. He served as the Medical Director of the Bowie office from 2007 to 2024. He also served as the Medical Director of the Greenbelt office and was a member of both the Maryland Executive Committee and the Managing Board for the Maryland division of NSPC. 

He joined Carolinas Pain Institute in October of 2024 to take over as Medical Director of the Charlotte office.  Dr. Closson has dedicated his career to relieving pain and fostering functional recovery using the latest interventional techniques.  He has given numerous lectures on low back and neck pain, complex regional back pain syndrome, spinal cord and peripheral stimulation.
