About

Carolinas Pain Institute was formed in 2004 by Dr. Richard Rauck.  Dr. Rauck was the Director of the Pain Control Center at Wake Forest University for over 20 years and decided to go into private practice with another group in Winston before forming what is now Carolinas Pain Institute.

We are the training program for the Pain Management Fellowship Program through Wake Forest University Baptist Health.  Dr. Rauck has been the Director for this over the past 20+ years.   We have trained over 200 physicians who practice throughout the United States.

Dr. Rauck was awarded the John J Bonica Award in 2013, the highest award presented to an individual for outstanding contributions in the areas of development, teaching and practice of pain management.   This is through the American Society of Regional Anesthesia.

After completing their Pain Management Fellowship, Dr. James North joined Carolinas Pain Institute in 2005, and Dr. Christopher Gilmore in 2007.

Dr. Leonardo Kapural joined Carolinas Pain Institute in 2010 from The Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Kamal Ajam joined in 2011 and expanded our operations to include a Pain Center through our affiliation with Wake Forest University Baptist Health at Brookstown in 2011.

Dr. Kamal Ajam joined Carolinas Pain Institute after he completed his fellowship training with us in  2011.   He is also board certified in Internal Medicine.  He works with the Wake Forest University Baptist Health at Brookstown beginning in 2011.

All of our physicians, mid-levels and employees strive to make a difference in patients’ lives every day.

Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

We are closed on major holidays.
